BEDFORD — Despite Euless Trinity’s top state and national rankings, it was Colleyville Heritage that came out with its offense firing.
But the Trojans answered on offense and held on defense, including intercepting the Panthers’ last pass in the final seconds to seal a 35-28 win Friday before an overflow crowd at Pennington Field.
Down 14-6 in the second quarter, the Trojans (6-0, 3-0 District 5-5A) scored 29 straight points — 22 coming in the second quarter to turn the deficit into a 35-14 lead. Tevin Williams, who ran for a game-high 78 yards, scored twice in the quarter, and Denarius McGhee threw the first of two touchdowns to Tyree Tucker.
The Panthers scored twice in the final six minutes of the game, but didn’t recover an onside kick with 2:59 remaining. Trinity punted after picking up one first down, giving Colleyville Heritage 37 seconds to drive 80 yards.
Steven Hill completed three consecutive passes, getting Heritage to midfield with 18 seconds left. The senior missed on his last four, however, including a Hail Mary that Dustin Emery intercepted.
Hill completed 41 of 58 passes for 409 yards.
Colleyville Heritage (5-1, 2-1) had just one play not go for positive yards on its opening drive, with Hill scoring from a yard out.
Trinity answered, with McGhee finding Alex Jones for a 47-yard TD pass. The Panthers replied with an 80-yard drive.
